Originally from Adelaide he completed his General Surgical Fellowship in 1993 through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Following this he completed two years of post-fellowship training in Vascular Surgery with senior registrar posts at The Royal Brisbane Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre.

He currently is employed as a visiting general and vascular surgeon at Ballarat Health Services, is credentialed as a vascular and general surgeon at St John of God hospital Ballarat and visits on a regular basis both East Grampians Health Services (Ararat Hospital) and Maryborough District Health Service (Maryborough Hospital) to provide surgical services. He consults regularly in Ballarat at Ballarat Surgical Clinic and in Ararat on a monthly basis at the Ararat Medical Practice. Since 2012, he has been credentialed in Peripheral Endovascular Therapy (Tier 1 and 2) (RACS Conjoint committee) at both Ballarat Health Services and St John of God Ballarat.He is also credentialed to provide surgical services at St John of God Hospital Geelong.

He was a participant as a surgeon in the local breastscreen service from 1997 -2012 and has been the lead clinician for the Grampians Integrated Cancer Service (Breast cancer stream) since 2009.He has been the Director of Surgery at St John Ballarat since 2005. As a general surgeon he maintains a strong interest in the management of surgical conditions of the breast. While his focus is not primarily to do with gastrointestinal surgical conditions, he does provide endoscopic services at all credentialed hospitals he visits and is again conjoint committee recognised in terms of his competence to perform these procedures.

His main expertise is as a vascular surgeon offering management of all arterial and venous conditions.His scope of practice includes the minimally invasive management of varicose veins including office based sclerotherapy therapies.He has performed several hundred stent graft procedures for the management of aortic aneurysmal disease since he introduced this treatment to Ballarat in 1999.He is the only surgeon in Ballarat to provide dialysis access procedures. Michael has met the requirements of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons Continuing Professional Development Program since its inception.He is a contributing member of ‘The National Breast Cancer Audit’ and ‘The Australian Vascular Audit’ again since their inception,and has always met the requirements set by these independent audits.
