Mr Kontoku (Kon) Shimokawa
BSc, MB ChB, FRACS
Kon is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and is a Specialist General and Upper Gastrointestinal (Upper GI) Surgeon. He has particular interests in oesophago-gastric, bariatric, and hepatobiliary surgeries. He received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) from the University of Otago and obtained his FRACS through the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he was Chief Registrar in his final year.
He undertook subspecialty training in the field of Upper GI with ANZGOSA (Australia and New Zealand Gastric and Oesophageal Surgery Association) where he studied at Fremantle Hospital in Perth and Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide. He also spent a year in Tokyo Japan as a research fellow in an Upper GI surgery unit.
Kon has particular experience and interest in minimally invasive (key-hole) surgery for malignant and benign oesophageal and gastric conditions. Further interests include diseases of the liver, biliary tract, gallbladder, and pancreas.
In bariatrics, he is able to offer a tailored range of procedures including lapbands, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgery.
He is a regular participant at the Grampians Integrated Cancer Service (GICS) Gastrointestinal Multidisciplinary Meetings. He also continues to be a dedicated member of ANZGOSA and maintains a high standard of surgical quality by contributing to the binational ANZGOSA and OSSANZ audits. He has maintained the requirements of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Continuing Professional Development Program.
Kon is employed at St John of God Ballarat Hospital, Ballarat Base Hospital, Ararat Hospital and Maryborough Hospital and is credentialed as a General Surgeon with Advanced Scope of Practice in Gastrointestinal Surgery. He is dedicated to giving a caring service to the patients of Ballarat Surgical Clinic.
